Relaxation Therapy with ASMR

Relaxation therapy is supposed to be a coping mechanism for me to get used to. After a particularly stressful day, I decided to search for relaxing videos on YouTube. Believe it or not, I am not a huge YouTube watcher, so I had no idea what I would be walking into. This search opened up a whole new world for me.

I thought relaxation therapy videos would consist of ocean waves or spring rain. What I found was people whispering, lip smacking, role playing, and a whole slough of other things to trigger an ASMR response.

WTF is ASMR?

Have you ever heard a soothing noise and gotten a slight tingle in your scalp? Or some sort of smell or sound that gave you good chills? Well, that is ASMR – Autonomous sensory meridian response. It’s a phenomenon that isn’t really scientifically explained. But, clearly a lot of people have experienced it and now seek it out. (Seriously, YouTube really does have everything.)

Don’t judge. Don’t knock it till you try it. 

Now, I have had this tingly scalp thing happen to me and was super intrigued to see if a video could make it happen. It’s a soothing feeling and awesome for anxiety, so what the hell. I started watching some videos…

I found myself intrigued, slightly disturbed, and a tad bit ashamed of what I was watching. I justified it as research and continued to browse.

Browsing through the ASMR videos had me go through a whole range of emotions and questions.

  • Am I a lesbian?
  • Why didn’t I think of this?
  • Should I feel dirty right now?
  • Holy crap, this is cool.
  • I have to blog about it.

ASMR Can Be Relaxation Therapy

So, after visiting quite a few channels, I found one that did trigger a response for me. It’s important to note that this is not a sexual thing at all. So, it doesn’t make me a pervert. It’s just soothing and can possibly be excellent relaxation therapy. I cannot get into the role-playing ones, or the extra quirky ones. I like the ones with crinkly noises the most. There is only one video so far that triggered a strong response from me. I don’t watch the video. I just pop my ear buds in and listen to it as background noise.

The video I am referring to is from Cosmic Tingles. This girl is just adorable. I listened to some of her other videos, and she’s quite interesting, as well. She started doing this because it’s known to help anxiety and she wanted to be able to help people out.
